Bedford City — The Bedford City Board of Education discussed demolition and salvage plans for the high school during its Nov. 20 meeting, describing a phased removal and a process to let alumni and community members view memorabilia before abatement and deconstruction.
Board and staff said only portions of the campus will be taken down in the near term: the North House and career-technical wing are slated for early removal while the main building, South House and gymnasium are not scheduled to be demolished until 2028. A small committee has organized community walk-throughs to let people tag memorabilia and request items; staff said walk-through groups are being kept small (about 10 people per session) and additional sessions are being added to accommodate demand.
Staff explained that abatement work will begin in February and that salvaged items are typically auctioned; the district will identify items that must move to the new building and publish a list of memorabilia available for purchase or distribution. Board members said they will consider how to balance access for out-of-town alumni with logistical and safety constraints during the transition.
The board did not approve any final policy on distribution during the meeting but directed staff and the small committee to continue organizing walk-through dates, identify items for salvage, and coordinate with the construction manager (Panzika) and demolition contractor.
