NEISD board approves 175‑day 2026–27 calendar amid concerns for hourly staff

The NORTHEAST ISD Board of Trustees approved a 175‑day district instructional calendar for 2026–27 after a public comment period and staff presentation explaining the calendar-design process and survey results.
Paraprofessional Teresa Hurd urged trustees to consider classified hourly employees, saying many hourly employees were not able to participate in the vote and could lose a week’s pay under a shorter calendar. In response, district staff described the design process, a staff and community survey, and the technical state changes that make a 175‑day calendar compatible with ADSE funding and expanded half‑day ADA for summer programming. District presenters said they collected 2,696 staff votes and that 664 staff members favored the 175‑day calendar.
Trustees pressed for additional data on the number of affected hourly employees (district staff provided approximate counts in discussion: roughly 400 campus instructional assistants/SPED aides, about 330 bus drivers/assistants and roughly 600 food service staff) and the financial impact. The board heard an estimate from the child nutrition office that losing five service days would reduce food-service fund revenue by about $1,000,000. Trustees approved the 175‑day calendar by a 6–0 vote and directed staff to return with budget-study numbers showing the cost/options to offset impacts for hourly staff.
