Executive Secretary McAllister told the planning commission that City Council’s Dec. 9 meeting approved several items referred by the commission, including a rezoning at 04 Eustace Boulevard, a conditional-use permit for a sign at 50 Maple Avenue, a conditional-use permit for a car wash at J. Clyde Morris, and a zoning text amendment related to ice venting. McAllister also reported that the Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special exception for an accessory structure at 11 Walnut Grove.
McAllister said the next planning commission meeting is scheduled for Jan. 21, 2026, noting the first January meeting was canceled for the holiday. She also announced that Katie Stodgill will not return after this meeting; commissioners and staff thanked Stodgill for her service since January 2018. Stodgill spoke briefly and said she appreciated the experience and asked commissioners to keep calendars up to date.
During the meeting several commissioners encouraged Newport News residents to apply for boards and commissions, citing civic engagement and the value of community representation on advisory bodies. The commission adjourned with holiday well-wishes from the chair.
