At the Dec. 15 meeting the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners recognized local agricultural contributions and announced a key personnel hire.
Awards: Lisa Childers, county extension director, presented Paige Kennedy Smart as the 2025 Outstanding Young Farmer. Smart said she was "much more comfortable in the cab of a tractor" but appreciated the honor and credited family and community support.
Hall of Fame: The board inducted Betty A. Green into the Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame in recognition of more than 18 years as a 4‑H agent, her introduction of an embryology program used in classrooms statewide, expansion of 4‑H to military families on Fort Bragg and efforts to train volunteer leaders. A PIO-produced video and in-person remarks highlighted Green’s statewide influence.
Personnel: County Manager Grier announced the hiring of Tufona Bradley as assistant county manager. Bradley, who spoke to the board, described more than 25 years of combined government and nonprofit leadership and said she is looking forward to joining Cumberland County’s leadership team.
The board offered congratulations and brief remarks; no formal board action was required for the recognitions or the personnel announcement at the meeting.
