Cumberland County library wins $50,260 IMLS/LSTA grant for artist-in-residence program

Assistant County Manager Faith Phillips told the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 15 that the county library will host a one-year artist-in-residence funded by a Library Services and Technology Act grant through the Institute of Museum and Library Services for $50,260.
Why it matters: Phillips said the project is designed to expand access to library services by embedding a local professional artist in library spaces, offering on-site programming and open studio hours to build community connections and support local artists. "This program is showing how we're evolving, delivering our library services and programs," Phillips said.
Program details: Phillips said the residency will provide more than 320 hours of open studio time, 14 unique public programs for youth and adults, school partnerships with Title I schools, drop-in experiences and a permanent contribution to the library’s special collections. The selected artist is Kia Jones; the program is being run out of Conference Room 1 at library headquarters, where the artist will work and present public sessions.
Commissioners asked for ways the public can find event dates. Vice Chairman Sherman Jones thanked library staff and asked for the web address; Phillips provided the library page: cumberlandcountync.gov/department/library/artist-in-residence and said exhibit dates will be posted there when confirmed.
Next steps: County staff said they plan to apply for a second-year grant to expand programming and reach. The library will post program details on its web page and notify commissioners when the exhibition date is set.
