City staff proposes moving two Suffolk voting precincts into new city facilities

City staff told Suffolk City Council on Dec. 9 that two voting precincts could be relocated into newly built, city‑owned facilities to improve access and avoid use of non‑city sites.
Interim Deputy City Manager Gary Jones said the Huntersville (Nansemond) precinct currently using the VMASS Center on University Boulevard is proposed to move to Fire Station 11 on Harborview Hampton Roads Parkway; staff said Station 11 was designed to accommodate voting, with a separate public entrance and adjacent parking allowing vote operations without interrupting fire station functions. Jones also proposed moving the Lakeside precinct from Morgan Memorial Library to the new downtown library under construction on Washington Street; staff said the new library will be ready in the spring and features a large meeting room and separate entrance with about 54 parking spaces.
Jones said both sites have been vetted by the city registrar and that formal relocation would require a future public hearing and coordination with the electoral board. Council members reacted favorably and asked questions about timing; staff said the registrar and electoral board would work with staff to identify other potential locations as needed.
Next steps: staff will schedule the required public hearing and work with the registrar on final recommendations to council.
