Geary County unveils online snow-removal maps and live truck tracking

Geary County officials demonstrated a new online tool that shows which entity is responsible for snow removal on county roads and provides a live view of county snow-removal vehicles.
County staff created a searchable tab on the Public Works page that lets users enter an address and see a legend identifying the responsible agency and contact phone numbers. The page also displays the location and status of the county’s snow trucks: green triangles indicate movement, green circles show a vehicle on but temporarily stopped, and black circles indicate a vehicle that is turned off.
Officials said the mapping is intended to reduce confusion about responsibility in places where jurisdiction changes (for example, inside a city block that reverts to county responsibility) and to give residents real-time reassurance that crews are deployed. The demonstration included a short walkthrough of zoom and overlay features as staff showed how to check incoming weather and view truck positions.
The county noted limitations: not all departments use the same licensed tools and smaller licensing packages restrict some capabilities for other jurisdictions. Staff said they are discussing how to expand similar reporting features in 2026 and welcomed feedback from departments and the public.
