A representative of the South Charleston City Council said Cobb County Commissioners did not approve a request that the community center be designated as an early-voting site at their meeting, and instead asked county staff for cost figures, proof of need and that the change be advertised because it would be a permanent countywide change.
Unidentified Speaker (S2) reported, "They didn't approve it tonight," saying county commissioners asked for figures and further information. The speaker said County Clerk McCormick agreed to compile the requested figures. The council member advised that the county asked the change be advertised as it would affect any county election using the community center.
Other council members discussed the logistics and staffing costs of extended early voting. One speaker said, "It costs what it costs," and another observed that South Charleston's vote pattern can be decisive in countywide elections, arguing for the community center's suitability as a site.
Speakers noted that changing the statutory timing or duration of early voting so it would run uninterrupted through Election Day would require legislative action; the council said persuading enough legislators remains a challenge.
Council members offered to attend the county commission's next meeting to present the case for the community center and to follow up when the county schedules its next session.
