The Tuscaloosa City Council approved several ordinance/resolution items and contracts in a single meeting, including a rezoning request, annexation, contract awards and preliminary action to issue a $45 million general obligation warrant.
Zoning and annexation: Council adopted zoning amendment to rezone about 0.84 acres at 2100 and 2102 5th Avenue East from SFR-1 to MR-1 after a presentation by Mr. Ponds and questions to applicant representative Chris Sentel. The council also approved an annexation of approximately 40.8 acres into the corporate limits of Tuscaloosa by unanimous consent.
Contracts and procurement: The council approved a slate of resolutions authorizing contracts and amendments including an amendment to the lease agreement with Hawthorne Global Aviation Services, LLC; amendment No. 1 to an engineering contract with McGifford and Associates LLC; professional services contracts; minor public works contracts; and routine purchases from local suppliers. The agenda also included authorizations for purchases from Pump and Process Equipment Inc., Tuscaloosa Tractor and other vendors; each item was moved, seconded and adopted by roll call.
Debt and hearings: The council authorized provisions for the issuance and payment of a $45,000,000 general obligation warrant series 2026A and set Jan. 6, 2026, as the date for a public hearing to consider zoning amendment No. 24. During the motion a council speaker asked rhetorically, "Have we blessed it enough times?" as the council completed the adoption motions.
Votes at a glance (selected): - Zoning amendment (2100 & 2102 5th Ave E) — adopted by council vote. - Annexation (~40.8 acres) — adopted by unanimous consent. - Authorize $45,000,000 GO warrant series 2026A — motion adopted; hearing set for 2026-01-06. - Multiple procurement resolutions and contracts (see meeting record) — adopted by roll call.
What this means: The council advanced land-use changes and moved forward with several contracts and financial authorizations that will govern procurement, capital projects and the scheduling of a public hearing on zoning in early January. The $45 million authorization sets the process for potential borrowing; the public hearing will allow public comment and final council consideration.
