Administration seeks to add South End Elementary roof repair to capital plan

The Southington School District administration told the board it will propose adding a long-running South End Elementary School roof repair to the capital improvement plan after discussions with the town manager.
An administrator reported that South End—s large pitched roof has experienced recurring leaks since the school opened and that earlier attempts to secure remedy from the installer and the shingle manufacturer were unsuccessful because the manufacturer has gone out of business. The administrator described the practical difficulty of diagnosing and repairing leaks on a large pitched roof—"it's kind of like whack a mole"—and said the town manager agreed to include the roof work in the municipality's capital plan so it can be addressed while bids are being solicited for other roofs.
The administration also provided a budget timeline, saying budget books were expected by Jan. 8, and that Mrs. Mellett has been working to narrow account numbers. The pupil services director position was announced as posting for 30 days with a regional recruitment scope.
Board members moved and voted to approve the capital improvement plan for 2026–31 as presented by the administration during the meeting.
