Planning and codes director outlines inspections, audit and move to 2024 building codes

Unidentified Speaker 7, identified in the session as the planning and codes director, said the department completed first-round interviews for a property-maintenance inspector and will conduct second interviews to choose the best candidate. The director said a state residential inspector will perform an on-site audit Dec. 18 covering paperwork, inspection sheets, permits and the status of current projects.
On building codes, the director said the city will move from the 2018 International Code Council (ICC) building codes to the 2024 ICC codes next year. Staff plan to prepare ordinances and call for a public hearing at the June 2026 board meeting, with a vote and code adoption targeted for the July 2026 meeting.
The director also thanked staff who assisted planning commissioners with new iPad setup and noted there will be no planning commission meeting in December; regular meetings will resume Jan. 27. The board did not take additional formal action during the report.
The planning office characterized the code update as a multi-step process requiring ordinance drafting, outreach and public hearings before formal adoption.
