DeSoto board adopts resolution urging legislature to reintroduce House Bill 817 on board-member removal

The DeSoto County School District board read and adopted a resolution encouraging senators and representatives in the 2026 legislative session to support the reintroduction and passage of House Bill 817, or similar legislation, that would provide a mechanism for removal of school board members for "malfeasance, misfeasance, or nonfeasance," the board said.
The resolution — read aloud by a board member during the Nov. 20 meeting — references Representative Kim Reimack as the sponsor who introduced House Bill 817 during the 2025 legislative session. The resolution notes the bill did not pass in 2025 and states the board believes a statutory mechanism is necessary to remove board members whose conduct violates the criteria listed in the bill, including breach of public trust or abuse of authority.
A motion to accept the resolution was made, seconded, and carried by voice vote with trustees indicating support.
