Kelly Shoemaker, a Hollyblynn TK teacher and GC member, told the Wiseburn Unified School District Board on Thursday that teachers and staff feel disconnected from district decision‑making and asked the board to "engage the services of a consultant to create a staff satisfaction survey." Shoemaker said district presentations often "feel like celebrations of checking items off a to‑do list, absent of input from the teachers and staff responsible for implementing these programs."
Shoemaker listed a long set of initiatives teachers are expected to implement — including TK expansion, Eureka math, CGI, Capturing Kids' Hearts, PLCs, Getting Reading Right training, iReady, and a dyslexia screener — and said the combined burden leaves classroom staff feeling "unsupported and poorly equipped to do the work they must do to teach and care for students every day." She urged the board to use factual analysis from a survey to inform budget and policy adjustments. "A factual analysis of the data collected could then be used to make budget and policy decisions to strengthen district initiatives," she said.
Board members acknowledged the comment. In later discussion, trustees and district leaders described continuing outreach to teachers and plans to bring principals back for second‑semester updates. Superintendent and staff did not adopt a motion at the meeting to commission the survey; the board said it would accept additional follow‑up and bring the item back with staff recommendations if appropriate. The speaker's request was recorded during the public‑comment period; no formal action was taken on Thursday.
