Mercer Island School Board honors outgoing directors and swears in two new trustees

The Mercer Island School District board opened its Dec. 11 regular meeting by recognizing two outgoing directors for their years of volunteer service and then formally swearing in two newly elected directors.

Julian Bradley and Stephanie Burnett each took the oath of office to begin their terms as director position number 2 and director position number 4, respectively. Both thanked family and community members and pledged to engage with district work and students.

After the oath, directors proceeded to the annual officer elections. Because multiple nominees were put forward for president, the board conducted roll-call voting in nomination order. Stephanie Burnett won the roll-call election and accepted the responsibilities of board president. The board then moved to nominate and prepare for a vice president vote; the president nominated a candidate for vice president to be decided through the board’s vote process.

The recognition segment featured extended remarks from colleagues praising the outgoing directors’ leadership on long-range facilities planning, student-centered policy work and financial stewardship. The board recessed briefly for a reception following the recognition and oath ceremonies.

Next steps: the board will finalize committee assignments and complete remaining officer elections as part of annual organizational work.
