Trustees consider year-round food-fridge cabinet on library grounds; HRIC to return with details

Trustees reviewed a proposal from the Human Rights & Inclusion Committee (HRIC) to install a year-round, non-electrified food cabinet (a "food fridge" style pantry for shelf-stable items) on library land.

The director said the unit would not be plugged in and would house shelf-stable donations; the HRIC would be responsible for stocking and daily monitoring and volunteers or other community groups could assist. Trustees asked the HRIC to clarify placement on the grounds, accessibility outside pantry hours, whether the unit would be locked overnight, and how the program would avoid vandalism or excessive one-person use. One trustee noted that several Massachusetts communities operate similar cabinets and that reduced stigma may encourage use by people who would not otherwise visit a food pantry.

Trustees expressed support for the idea but asked for operational details before endorsing placement on town property. Specific concerns included: avoiding obstruction of ADA ramps or doors, choosing a well-lit visible location to deter vandalism, and ensuring a sustainable stocking plan so the cabinet would not become empty and attract complaints to library staff.

The board agreed to invite an HRIC representative to the next trustees meeting (scheduled for Jan. 14) to answer operational and sustainability questions. The director said she would loop HRIC into correspondence and suggested the committee is likely to build a model that could be replicated elsewhere in town. No formal approval to install the cabinet was given at the session; trustees recommended further information and community partnership details be submitted for review.
