Police report: Torrington department down seven officers; patrols increased at newly opened Trinity Church shelter

A police presenter told the board the department is “currently down 7 officers right now,” and that one recruit is due to graduate the academy on Dec. 17 while another starts at the Waterbury Academy the following day. Four officers are slated to finish field‑training this month and two conditional offers are outstanding, the presenter said.
The presenter also said the homeless shelter that opened Dec. 1 at Trinity Church has prompted increased patrols: “Our officers are making themselves visible at the shelter,” the police representative said, adding that the presence has been appreciated by shelter staff.
Commissioners asked about traffic‑management and parking enforcement in other parts of town; police described ongoing coordination with school officials, armed security at some schools and regular patrols to address high‑congestion pickup times.
The board accepted the police chief’s October reports by voice vote during the meeting. Police leaders said they will continue providing weekly updates about major developments and staffing changes.
