Board discussion about whether to pursue a grant that previously required Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliance ended with members agreeing to delay a final policy decision while staff do further research and involve the community.
"CIPA is something that may interfere with the grama ecosystem in ways that we can't anticipate right now," the Unidentified Chair said during the discussion, urging careful review. Director John Hong told trustees the grant language had been reworked toward library revitalization (makerspace and shelving) and no longer strictly required CIPA compliance; he said he wanted more time to research implications for policy and programming.
Board members praised the cautious approach. "I think taking additional time to consider it is a a great idea," one trustee said, supporting further study and community input before adopting any CIPA-related change.
In routine business the board approved several items by voice vote or motion:
- The board set its next regular meeting for Jan. 22, 2026 at 3 p.m. (motion by Sari Kahler; second by Maddie Serna).
- The board approved the monthly budget reports for November 2025 (motion moved and seconded; motion carried).
- The board approved the library gift fund report for November 2025 (motion by Sari Kahler; seconded; motion carried).
- The board voted to close the library on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025, citing historically low traffic and staff workload; closure will be covered by employee vacation or floating holiday time (motion by Dr. Sue Segura; seconded by Sarah; motion carried).
Why it matters: The CIPA question carries implications for internet filtering, patron access and eligibility for some grants. Trustees opted for more staff research and community involvement before any policy change. The board's routine approvals set the calendar and cleared financial housekeeping matters for November.
