Richland 01 board highlights improved state report-card results, schedules 90-day findings presentation

A student ambassador and Superintendent Todd Walker briefed the Richland 01 Board of School Commissioners on Nov. 11 on the district's performance after state report cards were released Nov. 3. For the first time since 2001, the district had no schools rated unsatisfactory, the student presenter said, while the graduation rate rose to more than 84% and college-and-career readiness reached 73.3%.
"For the first time since the state began issuing school and district report cards in 2001, Richland 1 has no schools rated unsatisfactory," Omari, a senior at Eau Claire High School and the meeting's student ambassador, told the board during the superintendent's report.
Superintendent Todd Walker congratulated staff and students and outlined several district highlights cited in the report, including BLAST (Building Lasting Aerospace and STEM Trajectories) magnet programming and a $14,900,000 magnet school assistance grant awarded to the district in 2022 by the U.S. Department of Education. Walker also described communications improvements, including a "need help/contact us" webpage and a posted explanatory video intended to guide parents and staff to the correct school- or district-level contacts.
Walker announced he will present findings from his 90-day listening-and-learning plan at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 at W.J. Kenan High School; a written summary will be posted at richland1.org/90dayplan and the event will be livestreamed.
The report-card results and the superintendent's planned presentation mark the district's next steps to translate recent gains into a longer-term strategy for improving student outcomes, Walker said.
