School committee approves second readings on bullying and related policy updates; first readings set for meal modifications and building access

On Dec. 8 the Danvers School Committee moved and approved second readings of four policy documents that the administration revised following a bullying and harassment audit, and the committee advanced three new or revised policies for first reading.

Speaker 2 recommended amended Policy AC (nondiscrimination and harassment) and Policy ACE (civil rights grievance procedures) for second reading; both motions were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. The committee similarly approved a revised bullying prevention policy (JFCB) and an updated bullying prevention and intervention plan (JICFB-R) at second reading.

For new business the administration requested first readings on EFBA (school food and nutrition — meal modifications at no extra charge for students with disabilities or special dietary needs), removal of a redundant school committee norms-and-beliefs policy, and a new ECAB policy that would clarify access to buildings and grounds and strengthen visitor check-in procedures during school hours. Each of those items was taken as a first reading and was moved forward for additional review.

Committee members did not offer substantive public amendments during the votes; the motions proceeded by the standard move/second and voice approval process recorded in the meeting minutes. The policies amended for second reading were described as aligning district practice with applicable statutory and regulatory guidance and the bullying/harassment audit’s recommendations.

Administration said additional policy detail and operating procedures would be shared with the committee and community as the first-reading policies proceed through review.
