Durham County commissioners unanimously elect Dr. Mike Lee chair; Bridal Alam named vice chair

The Durham County Board of County Commissioners unanimously elected Dr. Mike Lee as chair and Bridal Alam as vice chair during its Dec. 1, 2025 work session.
Larissa Williamson, Durham County attorney, opened the meeting and presided for the initial nominations. An unidentified commissioner nominated Dr. Mike Lee for chair; a roll-call vote recorded affirmative responses from Commissioners Long, Barton, Jacobs, Lee and Valentine. After the vote Williamson relinquished the gavel to Dr. Lee.
"I'm honored to be chair today," Dr. Lee said, thanking the board for the trust and saying he looks forward to representing Durham and supporting staff. He urged community volunteerism and pledged to work closely with County Manager Hager and county staff.
Commissioners then nominated and unanimously elected Bridal Alam as vice chair. In brief remarks after the vote, Alam thanked colleagues for the honor and said she would support the board through a difficult budget year.
The votes were recorded during the work session roll calls and no objections were raised on the floor. The board immediately moved on to citizen comments and other agenda items after the leadership elections.
The board adjourned the work session after completing the agenda items.
