Triton committee approves updated IKF language to add course-completion pathways to competency determination
Summary
The committee approved updated graduation requirements (policy IKF) that add course-completion as an option alongside MCAS mastery, outline alternative measures and appeals for students with disabilities and English learners, and begin implementation for the class of 2026 with additional case-by-case work for some seniors.
Administration asked the committee to approve revisions to policy IKF, which update the district's competency-determination process by explicitly requiring course completion in addition to MCAS mastery options. Patrick explained how the district will operationalize competency measures: common, grade-level finals and yearlong portfolios in English 9 and 10; tailored end-of-year assessments aligned to the Big Ideas math curriculum for Algebra 1/Geometry/Algebra 2; science finals in development; and a document-based-question (DBQ)-style essay for U.S. history.
Patrick said the most immediate challenge is the class of 2026, where approximately 10–12 students have transcripts or course histories that will require individualized review to ensure they meet the updated competency determination before graduation. "We have some students that are in various stages... we've identified which students and families we need to work with specifically," he said. The policy includes supports and appeal processes for English learners and students with disabilities and instructions for transfer students.
A committee member moved to approve the updated IKF as a first-and-final reading; the motion was seconded and the committee voted. Administration said common assessments and syllabi will be collected and published so students and families can see competency benchmarks and that work will continue into January to align writing expectations across ELA and social-studies courses.
