Board declines to issue RFP for superintendent search; motion fails on split vote

During a Dec. 9 work session, a motion to issue an RFP for an executive search firm to recruit a permanent superintendent did not carry after a split roll-call vote.
Board member (speaker 6) moved to issue the RFP; the motion was seconded (speaker 4). In discussion, board members expressed differing views: some argued a search would establish the legitimacy and vetting for a permanent hire, while others (including Board member Morrison) questioned paying an outside firm an estimated $150,000 and suggested the district did not need an external firm when an interim superintendent is performing well.
On the roll call the motion failed (a split vote). The chair declared the motion did not carry and the RFP will not proceed as proposed. Board members said the decision will not preclude future discussion about search approaches but, for now, the board will not move forward with the external search RFP.
Next steps: none were scheduled during the session; board members said they remain committed to a fair process for permanent superintendent selection, but the method will require further discussion.
