Councilwoman Janie Leach said the formal recognition "means a lot to our community," underscoring a desire to ensure residents understand the contemporary as well as historical presence of Indigenous people in the region.
The council voted to adopt the proclamation with six members voting in favor and one absent. The measure was presented by the chair and supported by council members before a brief presentation from the invited tribal representatives.
The proclamation names local Indigenous groups and references regional tribal histories that the council said are important to acknowledge in county recognition and outreach. No formal county policy change or funding decision was recorded alongside the proclamation; the action is a formal acknowledgement and public recognition by the council.
