Conroe ISD trustees used part of the meeting to recognize student achievements, announce a principal hire and highlight a community donation.
Trustees recognized roughly 40 National Merit finalists from across the district, praising the students and their families for academic achievement. "That was really exciting," Unidentified Speaker 2 said about the recognition. Trustee Horton was singled out for comments on what it takes to be a National Merit semifinalist.
The board also announced that Nina Norman will serve as principal of Oak Ridge High School. Unidentified Speaker 2 praised Norman’s qualifications and character, saying, "She has a heart bigger than Texas and she is ready to dig in and excited." Unidentified Speaker 1 added that Norman’s human approach and emphasis on relationships is what students value.
Separately, the board announced a $15,000 donation to the Montgomery County Food Bank, which trustees estimated would fund nearly 16,000 meals. Speakers framed the donation as an example of the district’s community partnerships during the holiday season.
The meeting also included a brief discussion about possible mascots for the new Fowler school, with top suggestions including dolphins, falcons, sea turtles and sea lions; Janine Fowler’s history of sea conservation was cited as influencing a preference for 'sea turtles.'
