Conroe ISD trustees discussed potential changes to a facility-rental policy intended to boost community partnerships and public access to district facilities while avoiding operating losses, speakers said.
Unidentified Speaker 1 said trustees want to make district facilities accessible because taxpayers already fund them, but cautioned that rentals cannot "go in the red". Unidentified Speaker 2 described the goal as finding a "happy medium" that benefits both the district and community groups. "We have to find some sort of happy medium and how we can make that happen and be positive for both entities," Unidentified Speaker 2 said.
Trustees also discussed allowing teachers to offer after-school programs as a way to supplement their incomes. "I really like the option" for teachers to lead after-school offerings with reduced or free use of space, Unidentified Speaker 2 said, adding the board would explore options over the next month and return with possible policy or procedural recommendations.
No formal policy language or fee schedule was presented at the meeting. Trustees said staff will continue to draft proposals and bring recommendations back to the board, and that any change would need to balance public access, teacher opportunities, and fiscal responsibility.
