Operation Chill Crew proposed 'Beat the Heat Baskets' to provide sunscreen, wide-brim hats, misting fans and cooling supplies for people experiencing homelessness; the group requested $1,000 and plans to distribute through the Las Vegas Rescue Mission rather than direct outreach into tunnels for legal reasons.
Operation Chill Crew youth leader Sarah Wang told the YNAB board that summer heat poses a serious local threat and asked for $1,000 to assemble 50 care baskets containing protective and cooling supplies to be distributed through the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.
Wang cited local heat statistics during the presentation, saying last year 147 people experiencing homelessness died from heat-related causes, a 39 percent increase from the prior year. The proposed baskets would include sunscreen, wide-brim hats, neck wraps, gel ice packs, a handheld misting fan and a card listing cooling-station locations; presenters said distribution will be carried out by partner organizations rather than direct outreach in tunnels for legal reasons. The proposal included a line-by-line budget allocates costs across those items and estimated volunteer time of about 31.5 hours.
Board members suggested adding informational flyers and considering alternate containers (for example, sling backpacks) and recommended working with partner agencies to capture distribution data. Presenters agreed to pursue partner consent from libraries and charities and to ask the Rescue Mission about sharing outcome information; the YNAB board will deliberate and notify applicants of recommendations within three weeks.
