Sodexo audit and fall survey prompt food-service outreach after Murray survey finds mixed responses
Summary
District food-service staff reported a third-party audit (100% physical safety, 97% food safety) and a fall survey of about 415 respondents (14% faculty, 34% students, 51% parents). Key concerns included perceived insufficient eating time and cold food; staff plan outreach and internal improvements.
Gwen, representing the district's food-service operations, reported results from a third-party Sodexo audit at Longview and summarized findings from a district fall survey.
On the audit, Gwen said the physical safety inspection scored 100% and the food-safety portion scored 97%, noting the minor findings were tied to temporary maintenance actions (steam-well repairs that briefly lowered hot-holding temperatures and a fridge-temperature issue that staff resolved during the meal service). "We did really well," she said, and described steps to monitor the fridge and reinforce procedures.
Gwen reviewed the fall survey, which had about 415 respondents: 14% faculty, 34% students and 51% parents. Responses showed 48% of respondents eat school lunch every day, 37% sometimes, and 15% never. When asked why meals are not finished, 57% cited insufficient time; other answers included cold food (16%), not liking the food (17%) and not being hungry (23%). Gwen said servers were viewed positively (87% friendly) and 79% said meals were served quickly.
She said the department will focus on education for families and students to explain nutrition limitations and options, produce short social-media videos possibly featuring students, and evaluate internal practices to keep meals hot and appropriately portioned. Gwen said the team will meet and pursue targeted improvements based on comments.
