Doctor Hairston explained the recommended changes and timeline: implement the Arnette Hills attendance zone in 2026 by moving 44 students who currently attend Gibson to Arnette Hills (the students’ residences fall within the Arnette Hills zone), and assign 14 students who live in the Forest Hills zone but attend Schoolfield to Forest Hills; Park Avenue, Gibson and Woodbury zones would be phased into full implementation in 2027, and Schoolfield and related adjustments would be completed by 2029.
Doctor Hairston said Arnette Hills has capacity for the additional students and that, under the plan, teacher assignments would move to follow students; families who prefer to remain at their current school may apply to the district’s choice program but would be required to provide their own transportation if they remain outside their zoned school.
Miss Walker moved to approve the recommended modifications to elementary attendance zones; Miss Averett seconded. The clerk called the roll and the motion passed unanimously.
The board’s vote implements the recommended transportation adjustments for the affected students and directs staff to notify families and reopen the choice program in January for those who want to remain at their current schools with parent‑provided transportation.
