The Dawson County Board of Commissioners approved an amended resolution addressing cost-of-living adjustments and supplements for elected officials, creating a $10,000 attorney supplement for magistrate judges who are licensed attorneys and preserving local supplements for the sheriff and tax commissioner until the board acts to rescind or modify them.
A commissioner who moved the updated resolution said legal staff prepared the draft and that input from the chief magistrate prompted specific language clarifying that "all magistrate judges ... shall receive a local supplement if the magistrate is a licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia ... in the amount of $10,000 per attorney judge." The mover also asked that part-time magistrates receive the new $10,000 supplement and that existing chief and associate magistrate supplements be reclassified as "attorney supplements" and increased proportionately.
The mover told the board the change requires a budget amendment because the budget was previously approved with lower amounts and said the magistrate judge budget should be increased by $47,465.40. The motion was seconded and later recorded on the minutes as a motion by Commissioner Gaines, seconded by Commissioner Stowers. The board approved the resolution and related budget adjustment unanimously, recorded as approved 3–0.
The resolution language as adopted also explicitly continues identified local supplements for the sheriff and tax commissioner until such time as the Dawson County Board of Commissioners takes lawful action to rescind or modify them. Commissioners did not schedule a separate follow-up hearing at the meeting.
