County Manager Joey Leverett asked the Dawson County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 4 to adopt an updated five-year animal-control agreement between Dawson County, the City of Dawsonville, and the Humane Society of Dawson County. The current agreement in the county packet expires on January 1, 2026.
Leverett said the agreement largely remains the same, with language cleanups and one substantive change: in the past the county handled transport of animals impounded in the city; under the updated agreement the City of Dawsonville has agreed to handle its own transport of animals to the humane society. Leverett said all three parties, including the county legal team, have reviewed the document and that the city and humane-society boards have already adopted and signed it.
A commissioner asked whether the City of Dawsonville contributes financially to the humane society; the response in the meeting was that the city does not. Leverett said the parties would still provide mutual assistance if either needed help with an animal-control issue.
The item was presented for the board to approve; the transcript does not include a recorded approval or vote during the work session.
