Board requests VDOT school-bus signage and adopts VSBA policy updates; board asks for clarity on homeschooling tracking

At its Dec. 2 meeting the Halifax County School Board instructed division staff to contact the Virginia Department of Transportation to request a school-bus stop warning sign on East Hico Road near the 2-mile marker off Route 501, citing a hazardous stretch with multiple stops.
A board member described repeated, back-to-back stops and urged immediate action: "There has got to be one there implemented as quick as immediately possible," the member said. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff were asked to follow up with VDOT and to investigate placement of any additional signage or pavement markings as necessary.
Later in the meeting a board member presented final VSBA (Virginia School Boards Association) policy updates with tracked changes and asked the board to approve the updates for inclusion in the division policy manual; the board approved the item by voice vote.
During discussion of the policy packet, board members raised questions about tracking students who are homeschooled and the status of the religious exemption in pending legislation. The presenter said Miss Faith Bruce oversees home instruction and that staff would provide additional clarity on tracking and compliance procedures. On the religious exemption, the presenter said the division could only provide an interpretation and that potential legislative changes would require further review.
The board concluded the public portion of the meeting by voting to convene a closed session pursuant to Section 2.2-3711 of the Code of Virginia to consider personnel appointments, salary presentations, and disciplinary matters as authorized by that statute.
