South Boston Elementary students showcase holiday STEM projects to school board

Students from South Boston Elementary demonstrated holiday-themed STEM projects for the Halifax County School Board during the board's Dec. 2 meeting.
Principal Susie Milam introduced assistant principals and staff and described the school's December focus on technology-enhanced learning. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade presented projects that linked curriculum to hands-on engineering and coding activities: kindergarteners showed Ozobot work inspired by The Grinch; another group demonstrated VR "Polar Express" experiences; one class used toothpicks and mini marshmallows to build a model of Snoopy's doghouse; fourth-graders created an LED-powered Rudolph nose; and older students described Lego marble mazes inspired by Home Alone.
"We are proud to watch our students' knowledge and understanding grow each day," Principal Susie Milam told the board and audience. She invited the public to the school's community Christmas event on Thursday, Dec. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m., where families can see hands-on projects.
The presentations were framed as examples of how teachers integrate technology and engineering principles into grade-level standards. School leaders said the activities aim to boost engagement, problem solving and collaboration ahead of the semester break.
