Halifax school board names new high school auditorium for local leader

The Halifax County School Board voted Dec. 2 to name the new Halifax County High School auditorium for James E. Edmonds II.

A board member moved for the dedication and another seconded the motion. During discussion a board member said the naming of public facilities should include community input and referenced a board policy on naming. The motion was carried by voice vote after the chair called for ayes; one board member voiced opposition.

Board members and administrators thanked local officials and past leaders for work that helped make the new facility possible, including earlier county action and a local 1% sales tax that board members said helped finance projects. A formal dedication statement read at the meeting commemorates the auditorium "in recognition of your unwavering leadership, steadfast commitment, and the passionate leap in the power of public education" and lists the dedication date as Dec. 2, 2025.

Speakers at the recognition said the project reflected years of planning, local advocacy and funding partnerships. The board acknowledged the role of a former delegate and county supervisors who supported applying for grant funds tied to the district's facilities plan.

The board did not provide a recorded roll-call tally in the public discussion; the item was approved by voice vote. The meeting continued with other recognition and scheduled business.

The board plans no further public action recorded in the meeting minutes on the naming; the dedication plaque was made available that evening.
