Atherton EPC welcomes new members, reviews charter and committee role

New and existing members of the Town of Atherton’s Environmental Programs Committee introduced themselves and described the priorities they hope to advance this term.
Ken Frederick, a longtime resident and EPC member, said he favors education over regulation and emphasized measurable results. “You give them the facts and let them make the decision,” he said when describing his approach.
Gregory Lowe, an emeritus Stanford professor, said Atherton should accelerate electrification and move away from fossil fuels. New member Sriram Iyer cited his transportation committee experience and joined to support local education and measurable actions, while Allison Bloom, a user-experience professional with a background in energy and water management, said she wants to identify practical, high-impact projects the EPC can pursue.
The chair read the EPC charter aloud and staff clarified the committee’s advisory role to the City Council and the city manager’s office. Members discussed how the EPC can take the lead on some items versus responding to council requests, and staff outlined processes for bringing committee recommendations forward to council. The charter reading and introductions were followed by a staff report on the Climate Action Plan and discussion of outreach activities.
