Atherton EPC asks council to OK demonstration of battery-powered landscaping equipment

The Town of Atherton’s Environmental Programs Committee voted to send a resolution to the City Council requesting a public demonstration of battery-operated landscaping equipment, committee members said.

Committee member Ken Frederick introduced the proposal, saying the demonstration would let residents see products in operation and could be tied to Earth Day activities. “I will propose to the council that the EPC send the council a request… set up a demonstration day or more week to show all the awesome opportunities for green landscaping,” Frederick said during the committee discussion.

Frederick reviewed industry developments including GPS-guided robotic mowers and vendor leasing models that include maintenance, and said a town demonstration at Holbrook Palmer Park would be a low-cost way for residents to observe technology. Members discussed potential hurdles — equipment cost, vendor availability, and whether demonstration days would require additional town resources or vendor fees.

The committee moved and seconded the resolution and approved forwarding it to the council by voice vote; the chair recorded no objections on the record. The motion was presented as a request for the council to consider setting up a demonstration (timing and vendor costs to be determined by staff and council). The committee did not record a roll-call tally in the meeting transcript.

Next steps: staff will include the EPC’s packet material for the council agenda when the item is scheduled and notify EPC members about the council meeting so they may attend or provide additional input.
