Las Vegas YNAB review board hears pitches from more than 20 youth groups; vote deferred

The Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership (YNAB) grant review board heard presentations from more than 20 youth-led groups seeking micro-grants to fund summer programs, community service and youth development projects.
Students from Valley High School’s MSTeM program presented Ready, Prep, Go, a community preparedness fair that will demonstrate CPR and bleeding-control skills and seek a $2,000 award. Christopher Lane, a MSTeM student, said the program “is the only active MSTeM program in the Las Vegas Valley” and requested funding to expand community participation; presenters said certified instructors will demonstrate techniques but attendees will not receive formal certification cards.
Other projects included Crown Care, which proposes specialized hair-care kits for hospitalized children with textured hair and estimated a clear-labeled kit cost of about $600; Suit Up to Swim, which distributed more than 300 bathing suits last year through YMCA locations and plans sponsorships and additional distribution; Fremont PDMS’s recycling-and-hygiene initiative, which estimated about $4 per hygiene kit and said $2,000 would support building roughly 500 kits; and Hearts and Harmony, a youth-led podcasting and storytelling project seeking $2,000 for recording equipment and programming housed at 4201 West Washington in Las Vegas.
Several presenters stressed partnerships and follow-up. Crown Care said it coordinates donations with hospital floor managers rather than delivering directly to patients; Suit Up to Swim said municipal pools and the YMCA helped last year’s distribution and that organizers plan to buy larger sizes in response to demand. Nevada Volunteers’ youth commissioner, Sofia Booth, outlined a statewide reading-week book drive and a Youth Day of Service on March 7, 2026, asking for $2,000 to cover volunteer food, signage and outreach and estimating 100–200 youth volunteers.
Board members asked project teams for clarifying details about distribution tracking, volunteer roles and intended beneficiaries; presenters either supplied or committed to providing follow-up information to staff. Chair Ayanna Castro reminded presenters that the YNAB review board will compile funding recommendations and present them to the Las Vegas City Council on Feb. 4, 2026, and that applicants will be notified of the board’s recommendations within three weeks.
The meeting included routine procedural items — roll call, confirmation of open meeting compliance and a public comment period in which no members of the public spoke. No grant awards were decided at the meeting; the board will vote on recommended YNAB funding awards at a later meeting. The meeting concluded after a scheduling motion and brief closing remarks.
