Superintendent Ralph Carrero told the Lawrence Alliance for Education that Lawrence Public Schools closed the year with "remarkable" student successes, including a record number of graduates and expanded summer programming. He said Lawrence High School posted an "all-time historic" graduation of 789 students and noted other school-level milestones, including Abbott Lawrence Academy and summer-school gains.
Carrero credited stronger parent-teacher relationships and district initiatives for improved outcomes, and singled out the reborn district choir and a planned performing-arts academy as examples of investments in arts and student engagement. "Lawrence Public Schools is on the move," he said, thanking LAE and district staff for their work.
The superintendent said the district enrolled about 2,900 students in summer school this year and will provide free meals and weekly field-trip enrichment for summer-school students. He described a zoning change in summer programming to increase access and repeated the districtcommitment to bus students to enrichment experiences at the end of each week.
Carrero also celebrated individual student achievements, including scholarship and athletic honors, and called on staff and families to continue supporting students as they transition to the next school year. The meeting agenda noted the next LAE meeting is scheduled for 2025-09-18.
The Alliance adjourned after a motion to do so; the roll was called and the members listed on the record answered "Yes." The meeting concluded with routine thanks to staff and families.
What's next: the district plans to refine summer programming logistics and begin planning implementation details for the proposed performing-arts academy ahead of the 2025-26 school year.
