Members of the Middleton Water Resources Commission raised concerns about road salt appearing in municipal groundwater and discussed steps to better understand and communicate the issue.
A commission member reported that the city has detected elevated salt in two municipal wells, saying "we found the city has found in 2 municipal wells, like, a 150 milligrams per liter." Commissioners discussed whether to publicize the finding and whether to recommend technical fixes such as casing wells to prevent shallow contamination or abandoning wells nearing the end of service life.
The group discussed options for groundwater modeling to determine the extent and causes of the salt intrusion. Members noted that the Dane County groundwater model was developed in partnership with USGS, but the USGS modeler mentioned in the meeting, Randy Hunt, is retiring and would be unavailable until next year. Commissioners suggested contacting the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey or other academic resources to run or update models and invited Utility Manager Mike Meyer to review well records and casing depths.
Members also discussed operational timing: some noted the timing of salt deliveries and equipment calibration means recommendations to alter salt orders would be most useful before October; others said many deliveries for the season may already be in place. Commissioners agreed to place salt-use and snow-removal policy review, plus monitoring updates, on a future agenda so staff can gather data.
Commissioners stressed the finding does not currently meet EPA hazard thresholds and framed next steps as technical follow-up rather than a declaration of immediate public-health danger. "It's not officially an EPA hazard," one member said, while also noting it could be a concern for residents who track dietary salt intake.
