Nautica Isles West residents ask city to replace aging gate sign with small digital display

Residents of the Nautica Isles West community asked the City Council during public comment to replace an aging gate sign with a modest digital display to share brief neighborhood notices.

An unidentified resident opened the comment by saying the community wanted "to update that sign to, a digital sign" and that it should be small — not a billboard — ‘‘probably be, anywhere between 40 50 inch’’ and used for messages such as a “barbecue at the clubhouse” to help build a sense of community.

Joseph Valcastel, who identified himself as vice president of Nautica Isles West community, said he and others researched the proposed location and argued the sign would not be visible from the roadway because a curve would block direct sight lines. He added there is already electrical service at the site and that the plan would remove an old sign and place a small digital screen for community messaging. Valcastel said the community is coordinating with the fire department and PBSO and that the display would be used to direct residents to city information as needed.

Council or staff did not take a formal vote on the request. An unidentified staff member thanked the speakers and said staff "will take a look" at the proposal. No timeline, permit status, or formal decision was announced during the meeting.
