Mayfield Heights City Council on Nov. 24 unanimously approved Resolution 2025-63, authorizing the mayor to acknowledge and support the Zonta Club of Cleveland’s annual ‘Say No to Violence Against Women’ campaign and declaring an emergency.
Roseanne Dunlap, advocacy chair for the Zonta Club of Cleveland and a Mayfield Heights resident, addressed council during the public-comment period and urged members to pass the measure. “You have before you this evening a resolution for the city of Mayfield Heights to support and participate in the 16 days of activism as well as Zonta's say no to violence against women campaign,” Dunlap said. She asked council to continue awareness and education beyond the 16-day observance.
Council moved to suspend the rules and voted to approve the resolution. The motion to approve was moved by Miss Talbot and seconded by Mister Balestreya; a subsequent roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval by council members present.
The resolution was introduced by Mister Schmidlin and the council’s chair noted the Zonta Club’s local and international affiliation. Council members discussed and accepted a citywide awareness effort that includes distributing educational materials and lighting City Hall in orange to mark the campaign.
The near-term follow-up noted by council includes a planned photo of the orange lights for a press release and distribution of educational materials to residents. The resolution’s adoption took place with immediate effect under the council’s emergency declaration.
