Commissioners approve Axon cloud evidence-storage contract for prosecutor; $12,000 annual savings cited

Daviess County commissioners on Monday approved a cloud-based evidence-storage agreement proposed by the prosecutor’s office to replace local storage for body‑worn and evidentiary video.

The chair, noting prosecutor Abby was not present, said the cloud system would “store and be much, much better” for evidence needs and that, if adopted, the office expects to save “about $12,000 a year.” Commissioners said Abby will transfer funds from other accounts to cover the fee.

Commissioner Dale reviewed the vendor proposal and, according to the record, has approved the plan. Commissioners discussed alternatives — including maintaining local server storage — with one member noting that some local storage options can be cheaper initially but provide fewer features. After discussion, a motion to approve the request was seconded and carried.

The action approved the initial contract and authorized the internal transfers the prosecutor indicated would pay the subscription in the first year. No ordinance or new budget line was created on the record; commissioners said they expect the prosecutor’s office to complete the transfers identified in the packet.

The approval follows a staff recommendation to consolidate evidence management and is intended to address current storage constraints in the prosecutor’s office. The chair said Abby has been “battling a storage usage issue” and that the cloud solution would better satisfy chain‑of‑custody and long‑term retention needs.
