Three finalists appear at Middleton police chief forum as consultants outline screening process

A public forum for Middleton’s police chief finalists on the evening of the forum featured three candidates and two consultants who described how the finalists were chosen.
Moderator John Tom, a senior consultant with MGT, said the city received 22 applications and that he and fellow consultant Mark Ornstein narrowed that pool through paper screening and interviews before a police commission interview stage. “We presented a group of how many? ... I think we had 8,” Tom said, adding that the commission later reduced the pool and selected three finalists to appear at the forum.
The three finalists — Warren Allen, who served three decades with the Milwaukee Police Department; Steven Thompson, who described a long career in New Berlin’s department and work in training and community outreach; and Jeremy Geiser, a captain with the Middleton Police Department — delivered opening biographies and answered community-submitted questions about policing strategy and departmental priorities.
The consultants said the process continues: the candidates will have additional interviews, including an executive session and follow-up meetings with city personnel and the police commission. John Tom said there would be time after the forum for attendees to speak informally with the candidates.
The forum structure emphasized community input: Tom said many questions came through a QR-code submission and that answers tonight reflected community concerns. The panel closed with short statements from each finalist and a reminder that the commission will continue its selection work in subsequent meetings.
