Summary
Council approved a conceptual restoration plan for the city‑owned lakeside park that includes dune grasses, native shrubs and trees, ADA trails, parking improvements and a central pavilion; staff said funding for phase 1 has been secured and implementation could span multiple years.
Consultants from North by Nature Landscapes presented a conceptual restoration plan for the Michiquis Lakeside Park designed to naturalize the Lake Huron shoreline and add community amenities. The plan calls for four primary ground covers (including American dune grass and tussock sedge), roughly 60 trees, 140 shrubs, new gravel and ADA‑accessible trails, a pavilion/fire pit area and beach access improvements.
The consultant said the project is intended to restore a natural Lake Huron shoreline and that the first installation phase will prioritize parking and trail work. Council heard that phase 1 has funding already identified (staff referenced prior authorization of approximately $20,000 toward the project) and that project buildout could run several years depending on volunteer support and additional grants. The council voted to accept the conceptual plan and directed staff to proceed with phase one for which funding has already been secured.
Next steps: staff will schedule spring construction of trails and parking and return with further phasing and grant opportunities as they develop.
