Resident urges Klamath Falls council to ensure winter shelter and services for people experiencing homelessness

During the public-comment period, a Klamath Falls resident identified by the mayor as Wren urged the council to address homelessness through services and housing supports rather than moral judgment.

Wren said she was frustrated by the outcome of a recent town hall and argued that religious institutions’ efforts must be paired with programs that address core issues such as employment, rent and treatment for substance use and mental-health disorders. “If you've gone and baptized somebody, but you've not resolved the core issues in their life as to them not having gainful employment or rent that they can afford, you're not gonna fix anything,” she said.

Wren praised a city contact who provided money to her church’s hot-meal program but said the newly opened warming center operated by Thrive (opened Dec. 1) is not sufficient to prevent injury from exposure on very cold nights. She described a friend, Ryan, who is unhoused and volunteered at the church program, and asked the council to consider measures to ensure that “during any night where it is below freezing, that we know that homeless people have a place that they can go.”

Wren asked the council to frame homelessness as a services and public‑health issue and to consider investments that connect people to stable housing, employment and treatment. The mayor closed public comment after no additional speakers signed up; the council did not take formal action on the request during the meeting.
