San Gabriel honors employees at service awards; council approves consent calendar 5-0

San Gabriel — The San Gabriel City Council on Dec. 2 used a special meeting to present employee service and recognition awards and to handle routine business, approving the consent calendar by a 5-0 vote.
City Manager Lazaretto opened the program recognizing employees who reached service milestones and named winners across categories including five-year, 10-year and 20-year service awards. ‘‘Thank you to all of this year’s recipients,’’ Lazaretto said, and asked council members to join him to hand out awards.
Why it matters: The awards acknowledged public safety, public works and cultural staff who the city says helped deliver services and responded to emergencies this year. In one highlighted case, Lazaretto said the San Gabriel Police Department detective bureau arrested a suspect in a July 22, 2025, warehouse theft at San Gabriel Valley Medical Center and ‘‘recovered more than 4,000,000 worth of stolen medical supplies and equipment within one day of the incident.’’ The city manager presented the detective bureau (naming lieutenant Renee Lopez and other members) with a teamwork award for that response.
Other recognitions included a leadership award for Josh Fairman (Mission Playhouse), customer service awards for Kimber Gutierrez (human resources) and Chris Kalbocklian (community development), part-time employee awards for Zhihao Zhao and Desiree Gomez, and the overall work performance award to Officer Steve Guyona (San Gabriel Police Department). Lazaretto emphasized that awardees were chosen by colleagues rather than department heads or the council.
Council business: After public comment, the council considered the consent calendar. Vice Mayor Chan moved to approve the consent agenda and Council member Ding seconded; the motion passed unanimously, recorded as a 5-0 vote. The meeting minutes show no items were pulled from the consent calendar for separate discussion.
City manager announcement: Lazaretto told the council and public about an upcoming ‘‘talk of the town’’ on Monday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. at Jefferson Middle School. Police Chief Elizalde and staff were scheduled to present information and answer questions about which e-bikes are legal on streets and sidewalks and general safety for riders and pedestrians.
Procedural notes and next steps: The mayor said the council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Dec. 16, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. The Dec. 2 meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
