Explore Siouxland presents visitor-impact data; council clears annual contribution via consent agenda

Tyler Doherty, executive director of Explore Siouxland, presented the organization's recent tourism metrics, marketing strategy and event partnerships, and described how the group is funded by a voluntary 1.65% hotel folio fee collected by participating hotels.

Doherty highlighted statewide and local numbers released by the state of Iowa and said local visitor spend and employment metrics have set recent high-water marks for the organization. He noted the role of sports and large events — including the NAIA volleyball championships — in driving out-of-area visitation, and described search-engine marketing (SEM), remarketing and print partnerships used to recruit visitors from markets roughly 50 miles and beyond.

Council members praised the presentation and asked about priorities, local recognition of the brand and how the group measures tax and household impacts; Doherty said tourism activity helps save local households an estimated $1,000 to $1,500 annually by contributing sales and lodging tax revenue that offsets property-tax pressure.

Item language on the agenda described a resolution approving a letter of understanding with Explore Siouxland and authorizing an annual contribution (deferred from the Dec. 8 agenda). Councilors treated the resolution as part of the consent agenda; the clerk noted that consent items pass unless a separate roll call is requested. The consent agenda, which included the Explore Siouxland item, advanced without individual roll-call objection at the meeting.
