Tupelo council approves $250,000 draw to Community Development Foundation for neighborhood revitalization

The Tupelo City Council voted to authorize a $250,000 payment to the Community Development Foundation as part of an ongoing neighborhood revitalization effort.

City staffer Tanner told the council this is the third draw from the foundation and "this will be the third $250,000, totaling $750,000 that we have dedicated to the revitalization of this particular neighborhood." Tanner said the foundation "has closed on, I believe, 23 properties" and reported the group "has 11 contracts and ready to close on 11 more" properties.

The order to authorize the payment was added to the agenda by motion, seconded and approved during the Nov. 18 meeting. Council discussion on the item was brief and no public speakers addressed the payment during the meeting.

The council did not provide additional detail on the budget source during the motion beyond staff's explanation that this is a continued draw under the city's commitment to the revitalization project. No council member recorded a roll-call tally in the transcript; the motion passed with the colloquial "All in favor" confirmation at the meeting.

City officials explained the foundation has closed multiple acquisitions and is proceeding with contracts to purchase additional lots and houses in the targeted area. The council took no separate action on specific property acquisitions at the meeting.

The council adjourned after completing the agenda; staff indicated the revitalization project and future draws remain subject to ongoing reports and contract closings.
