STILLWATER, Minn. — The Board reviewed a draft 2027–28 school calendar built on the district’s early-start pilot, and administration outlined how it will evaluate the schedule before the board votes.
Mark, a district presenter, said the calendar includes 192 teacher days and 172 student contact days, meeting state minimums. “This calendar here is the third year of the early start time,” Mark said, describing professional development days, nine PD/workshop days and grading days scheduled after each quarter. He explained hour requirements by grade band — kindergarten 850 hours; grades 1–6 about 935 hours; grades 7–12 about 1,020 hours — and said the district banks its schedule to meet hourly requirements.
Mark walked the board through month-by-month highlights including new-teacher workshops in August, grading days after quarter ends, winter break schedules and a spring break aligned with the end of the third quarter. He said administrators prioritized maximizing five-day instructional weeks for family consistency.
Board members asked how the early-start model compares with other years and what data the district will collect. Mark said administration will survey families, students and staff and analyze achievement and attendance data as part of the pilot evaluation; the board will be asked to approve the calendar at its Dec. 16 meeting.
No formal action was taken on the calendar at the study session; staff encouraged continued public questions and said families may email Mark with feedback before the vote.
