Wakota Federal presents $1,130.70 to district, partnership to return card interchange income to schools

Wakota Federal Credit Union representatives joined the South Saint Paul school board meeting on Nov. 24 to present a check and describe a new partnership that will return a portion of interchange income to the district.
Lisa Brandecker introduced Wakota’s Mary Matheson and Deb Griffith. Matheson described the credit-union program that places the district’s logo on debit/credit cards and directs a portion of interchange income back to the school every six months. She presented "a check for $1,130.70" covering Feb. 1–Sept. 30 and said the program will continue with further payments on a semiannual schedule.
Mister Gastillo, who runs the school store as part of a career-and-entrepreneurship class, explained how the funds would be used: to bring embroidery capabilities in-house, offset costs for apparel production, and potentially purchase a 3D printer (estimated by staff at about $600) to expand product offerings such as bracelets, key chains and lanyards. Students who run the store described managing inventory, making products with Cricut machines and working on marketing and promotions.
Matheson said membership in Wakota Federal is open to people who live, work, worship or volunteer in Dakota County or immediate family members of existing members, and that outreach to increase card adoption will occur after the new year.
The presentation closed with a group photo and board thanks to Wakota Federal for the contribution.
