Tim Klein of the treasurer’s office updated the board on property tax billing and related legislative tax relief items.
Klein said the county will mail roughly 215,000–218,000 property tax bills this year and reported the total tax charge at approximately $774,000,000. He described two items taxpayers will see on their bills: homeowner tax relief (referred to in the meeting as HTR or HDR), which was reported as approximately $40,496,000, and the School District Facilities Fund (SDFF), reported as about $47,394,000 — a roughly 74% increase compared with the prior year. Klein said those items are driven by state legislative actions and formulae that can vary by year and by school district.
Klein also noted the Cloverdale facility is open and that, because the tax due date (the 20th) falls on a Saturday this year, the tax due date is extended to Dec. 22. Klein cautioned that only a portion of the overall tax change is under county control; the treasurer’s office applies the budgets submitted by taxing districts when calculating the bill totals.
The board asked clarifying questions about the nature of the credits and where they appear on the bill; Klein said the auditor/treasurer’s office will include explanatory text and an asterisk on the bills so taxpayers can identify state‑provided credits.
